What I learnt this week: 30th April 2020

A book about a book club

When my editor suggested my next book be about a book club I was, well to be frank, a bit nonplussed. Yes, I’ve always loved reading, in fact I can’t remember a time when I’ve not had a book on the go, but it’s always been a solo hobby. I’ve never belonged to a book club. Then again, I suppose in a way family and friends are like a virtual club; we talk about our favourites, enthuse about the latest, waffle on about what we like about them… okay, probably the waffling is only me. The thing is though, much as I love talking about books, I’ve never felt I could do it at a club because the books I read are all romance; sometimes with an element of suspense, sometimes with a comic twist, but always with a love story running through them. To me, book clubs were for people who liked more literary, more diverse tastes than mine.

But what if there was a book club that read books that I’d like to read? And what if the discussion was more of a chat among an eclectic group of members including a dog, a baby and a young at heart octogenarian – all helped along with alcohol (umm, for the human adults only). And what if the meetings took place in a book shop that overlooked the sea, and had its own tall, dark and handsome owner?

Well, welcome to my next book… the Beach Reads Book Club!

Here’s the blurb:

Welcome to the Beach Reads Book Club…where love is just a page away…

When Lottie Watt is unceremoniously booted out of her uptight book club for not following the rules, she decides to throw the rulebook out the window and start her own club – one where conversation, gin and cake take precedent over actually having read the book!

The Beach Reads Book Club soon finds a home for its meetings at Books by the Bay, a charming bookshop and café owned by gorgeous, brooding Matthew Steele, and as the book club picks heat up, so too does the attraction between Matt and Lottie.

If there’s anything Lottie has learned from the romances she’s been reading, it’s that the greatest loves are the ones hardest earned.

A love letter to chicklit, romance, romcoms, whatever you want to call them!
